Safety tips for professional drivers
A clean safety record keeps you employable and gets everyone home. These habits are taught in every solid training program—use them every trip.
Before you roll
- Walk around every time: tires, lights, airlines, fifth wheel, mirrors, and load securement.
- Plan fuel and breaks so you are not rushing in bad weather or after hours.
- Set GPS and ELD before you move—no typing while rolling.
Speed and space
Most preventable crashes come down to following distance and curve speed. In rain or snow, double your gap and assume bridges freeze first. If you are unsure about clearance, get out and look.
Fatigue
HOS rules are a floor, not a ceiling. If you are nodding off, a 20-minute nap beats “pushing through.” Caffeine is not a substitute for sleep debt over multiple days.
Work zones & four-wheelers
Expect sudden braking near exits and construction. Cover your brake in heavy traffic; assume the car beside you does not see you.
Personal security
- Park in well-lit, busy areas when you can.
- Lock doors at fuel islands and keep valuables out of sight.
- Trust your instincts—if a pickup location feels wrong, contact dispatch.
